Koch Lorber Films presents “IMAGINARY WITNESS: HOLLYWOOD AND THE HOLOCAUST” (25 December 2007) (92 mins/B&W/Color) (Dolby Digital) — This is an expertly made documentary on Hollywood, not fair how they handled one topic, but how they are embroiled in modern politics — There will be some surprises to some moviegoers and clips from some relatively unknown gems, some of which I have never seen and will now witness out! — Otherwise, I have to give this documentary a mountainous thumbs up — Narrated by Gene Hackman and featuring a mighty series of clips and interviews, IMAGINARY Gape is a revelation, not least for its sizable inclusion of material from BEFORE the Holocaust even happened, including American newsreel footage of Nazi book burning that treat it like a fraternity prank and pre-war Hollywood films in which characters refer to Jews as non Aryans — This is one documentary not to be missed.

Story line and residence, This is what Hollywood needed to do -and what not- to present Nazi Germany’s intentions — It is a well-documented film with mountainous interviews and unique footage to show that cinema can be dilapidated to fight for the moral and contaminated of world events — In my book this is a titanic film to illustrate how everyone turned their attend on what Hitler was doing against the Judaism — Nevermore, please — Some of the raw footage is missing when American troops discovered the death camps — However, the narration accomplished the feelings of those who were watching befriend then — Produced for the cable television network American Movie Classics, Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust was premiered at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival.

Total Time: 92 mins on DVD ~ KOCH Lorber Films ~ (01/13/2009)

I found this documentary to be a compelling perceive. It begins with an explanation for the lack of portrayal in Hollywood movies about the rising Nazi threat assist in the early 1940s. The reason for this was due to the fact that Germany accounted for 10% of Hollywood’s foreign market. But economics wasn’t the only reason for the dearth of anti-Nazi depictions in movies made by Hollywood. There was quite a bit of anti-semitism within the US itself - e.g. the Ku Klux Klan and the German Bunde [sic], an organization that was based in the US and represented the interests of the expansive German population in the States did not want to discover attacks on Hitler or the Nazis.

Yet, there were some compelling portrayal of life under the Nazis and how it affected the Jews. Movies like The Mortal Storm with Jimmy Stewart told the anecdote of a reliable, upper middle class Jewish family in Germany and how the anti-semitic movement in Germany under Hitler and the Nazis affects them. There are also movies like The big Dictator starring Charlie Chaplin [who funded the movie himself], playing dual roles of a Jewish barber and a parody of Hitler. It was in the Tall Dictator that the word “Jew” is first referenced in a Hollywoood production [even in the Mortal Storm, the phrase "non-Aryan" is ragged when referencing Jews].

This is a well-researched documentary and for someone like me who is enthusiastic on anything to do with the Holocaust and WW II history, I found it to be a minefield of fascinating historical facts and trivia. I made a list of classic movies that I understanding to search for up and add to my library - movies like “To Be or Not to Be”, starring Carole Lombard [a comedic attack on Nazi ideology], None Shall Dash [1944], The Search [1948], and Singing in the Dim [1956].

Besides covering the classic movies dealing with the Holocaust, there are also references to more contemporary productions such as Schindler’s List, Sophie’s Choice, War and Remembrance [1988 mini-series], and of course Holocaust [1978 mini-series].

A must-watch documentary for those eager in the Holocaust and Hollywood’s depiction of it through the years.

DRIVING LESSONS is a dinky film that sneaks up on you. What at first seems to be a bit of fluffy nonsense comedy British style is at its substandard a very handsome record about coming of age and the needs for critical friendship of both the young and the elderly. Writer Jeremy Brock (’Mrs. Brown’, ‘Charlotte Gray’, ‘The Last King of Scotland’) here directs his believe screenplay and the result is a cohesive, progressively curious fable filled with involving and diverse characters, each performed by beneficial actors.

Ben Marshall (Rupert Grint, standing firmly on his bear as a developing actor post ‘Harry Potter’ series) is a serene, insensible limited poetic seventeen-year-old living with his bird watching Vicar father (Nicholas Farrell) and his obsessive compulsive, rigid, evangelical do-gooder mother (Laura Linney) in a home where ‘needy people’, such as the murderous cross-dressing Mr. Fincham (Jim Norton), lift precedence over family matters: the mother is by the procedure having an affair with priest Peter (Oliver Milburn), using Ben as her conceal!

Sad Ben is among other things attempting to learn to drive a car. His mother is a abominable teacher and decides he needs professional lessons AND needs to win a job to succor pay for unpleasant Mr. Fincham’s needs. Ben follows an ad and meets Dame Eve Walton (Julie Walters), an elderly has-been actress who is as zany as any character ever created. She hires Ben and the fireworks initiate. Through a series of incidents, including a camping prance Evie demands they occupy, the two learn life’s lessons missing from each other’s natures: Ben learns self respect and self confidence and Evie finds a correct friend who will allow her to plunge her stagy facade and be the dear human being she has been hiding.

Julie Walters, always offering the finest skills of acting in every character she creates, finds a role like no other here: she is outlandishly wild and lovable. Rupert Grint is exactly the accurate choice for the challenged coming of age Ben. The chemistry between the two is as tender as that in the classic film ‘Harold and Maude’. Laura Linney is as always a reliable actress playing a role quite different from her usual repertoire. And the supporting cast is a panorama of pleasing characterizations. This film is a exquisite surprise and one certain to warm the heart and entertain those who esteem glowing writing and direction and acting - and message! Grady Harp, July 07

“Driving Lessons” succeeded. However simple the anecdote may be, the messages and character dynamics are radiant.

The fable begins with Ben (played by Rupert Gint), a teenage boy raised by a repressive mother (Laura Linney) and passive father, acquiring a job with an older actress.

The film follows the two leads who play with the “worn couple” dynamic; yet underneath, the epic is about the actress, “Dame” Evie Walton, releasing the suppressed character of Ben. Throughout the film Ben blossoms as a writer and poet, discovering the expedient in life while faced with it’s brevity.

Definitely worth watching. There’s a lot of films which boast a sort of “grandeur” about poetry and youth, but essentially topple short and sometimes even flat. This epic does not. It’s simple, comedic and sweet without becoming contrived.

I’ve seen LONESOME DOVE so many times I’ve practically got the six hours of dialogue memorized. Yet I’ll hold watching this fine adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s chronicle unique, over and over again. Why? Two words: compelling fable.

The friendship of Augustus McCrae and Woodrow F. Call is the underlying theme of LONESOME DOVE; it’s the motor that drives the fable. When these two weathered stale lawmen occupy a herd of cattle from Mexico and location off for Montana for one last colossal adventure (”I wanna ogle that country,” says Call to Gus, “before the lawyers and bankers regain it.”), the stage is state for a Western with plenty of humor, action, violence…tragedy.

This production makes McMurtry’s unforgettable characters literally leap off the page. Robert Duvall IS Gus McCrae…Tommy Lee Jones IS Woodrow Call. Both performances are so intellectual and on target the viewer is transported seamlessly to McMurtry’s sage, a record centering around the undying loyalty and friendship of these two men.

LONESOME DOVE is a film that will entertain you, acquire you over the stout gambit of human emotions, then after six hours leave you begging for more. Jones and Duvall lead a stellar cast in a grand film that has but one weakness: it has to kill. And McMurtry’s account is told–told so well that no other Western even comes finish.

It is finally nice to gather the entire Lonesome Dove record on DVD. While I have to agree that the portray is not as pristine as I would have liked, it is definitely better than the VHS version that I believe. The sound is Dolby Digital mono, but surprisingly trustworthy.

One thing to impress - the movie breaks at the same fracture points that the mini-series did when broadcast. After approximately 1.5 hours, the credits roll, and then the next piece starts. Not that poor, but a tiny clunky. The interview snippets with Larry McMurtry are kind of insightful and nice to have.

Robert Duvall is really astonishing in the role of Augustus (Gus) McCrae. The man is the character. I found I was laughing to myself all over again at Gus’s western philosopher dialogue, and wishing that we all opinion a small more like him.

If you loved the VHS version and want a better copy, steal this DVD. Though not crystal determined, it is an improvement over my ancient VHS copy and with instant chapter access, powerful more convenient to understanding.

First of all, kudos to Disney for *finally* including a MANDARIN LANGUAGE AUDIO TRACK (the unique DVD had French and Spanish- no Chinese) . It’s about time!!!

Next: I have to emphatically disagree with reviewer Bill Mydo below. -You will excuse me if I consume some diminutive time defending this film against his critique; Mulan happens to be my current Disney inspiring movie, second only perhaps to Beauty and the Beast. Perhaps my being Chinese-American may have something to do with it, as does the fact that I strongly identify with the character’s self-doubts. Calm, I am fairly particular as to what I reflect “genuine art”; and it boggles and confounds me that anyone would fail to gape the disagreement between this movie and, for example, Hunchback or Hercules.

Yes, Disney’s Mulan is very considerable a western/ American movie, made for western and American- not Asian- audiences. No, they “didn’t obtain it factual”; or, not exactly. But I never expected them to, and I give them a wonderful deal of credit for trying. They came quite a bit closer that I ever plan that they would. Nor do I pick up this movie overly feminist (no more than Snow White or Cinderella are “chauvinist”) . Mulan may be a strong female character, but she is not Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine. Mulan is not defined by rebellion, nor by what she rejects. Instead she upholds her sense of honor as she struggles to accept out who she is and where she fits in. Moreover, in a genre known for its blatant ad nauseum boy-meets-girl appreciate themes, I truly appreciated the downplayed understatedness of the “interest” between Mulan and Captain Shang.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mulan! Click Here

As to the “commercial” aspect of the film; yes, it had its tie-ins and its merchandising. What Disney movie doesn’t? But the genuine recount is the worth of the film itself, and on this I buy exception to the review below. I maintain there is more in it than Mr. Mydo gives credit for.

The film does have its awkward moments. The scene with the match-maker and Mulan’s first entrance into the army camp are both extremely painful to watch- I do not luxuriate in watching anyone be utterly humiliated- not even a cartoon character (and I do not own that someone as shimmering as Mulan would fumble so badly over simply coming up with a original name) . I also pick up it somewhat irksome that one minor character, Mushu the dragon, continually steals attention away from the movie’s suited focus. And there are a number of jokes and visual gags that closely border on PG. I found this in somewhat unpleasant taste in a kid’s movie.

But these faults are counterbalanced, and more than compensated for, by the scenes that really work. The opening “brush painting” of the Grand Wall; Mulan’s song (Reflections) and the ensuing scene of loving encouragement from her father; the scene where she decides to leave home; her heart-to-heart talk with Mushu at the abandoned camp in the mountains; the Imperial Palace where she is honored by the Emperor before all China… the sheer artistry of these scenes is breathtaking.

When the Special Edition DVD is released, I intend to be first in line!

I do not occupy that I have EVER watched an racy film that taught more of the values that I would want future generations to learn from than MULAN. I have watched this movie at LEAST 25 times and simply assign - it is PROFOUND.

The movie opens with Mulan getting ready to go to the “Matchmaker.” Although, she is a graceful girl, she lacks the grace to originate a profitable impression. Devistated, she returns home. Her father tells her that “like the cherry blossoms, her season has not approach.”

When China is invaded by the Huns, there is one line in the movie that is uttered by the emperor and it is SO insightful. The general in charge of the armies confidently announces that his men can handle this invasion. However, the emperor issues a proclamation calling all available men because, “sometimes a single grain of rice may be the deciding balance in tipping the scales.” Or - “one man may form a disagreement between conquest and defeat.”

In this case, it turns out to be a woman! I Worship how Mulan interacts horribly with the men at first and how she is told to leave. Mulan has to explain herself and she doesn’t give up.

Even after she is a hero, Mulan is disgraced when it is discovered that she is a woman. She is shunned and yet when she must reach to the rescue of China again, her comrades are accurate to her and listen to her ideas.

Throughout the movie there are the different interactions of those who secure women for who they are and those who are stuck within stereotypes.

Mulan is a cute and VERY comic movie with adorable songs. What makes it a Spacious movie however, is the very noteworthy message that we should consider one another on our merits and character - whether we be men or women.

Last year, I reviewed the book CHOCOLAT by Joanne Harris. I’m blissful to characterize that this film adaptation is even better than the print version. And how often can one say that with a straight face?

The film begins with a north wind blowing Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol) into a shrimp French village at the very beginning of Lent, that pre-Easter period of time, which, in the Catholic liturgy, is dedicated to prayer and physical self-denial. It’s not a suited time for Vianne, an apparent non-Christian, to commence up a chocolate shop across the town square from the church. But, she does so anyway, remarkable to the terror of the village mayor, the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina) . Reynaud is puritanically obvious to shut the shop down, and Vianne is equally certain to hold it begin. An irresistible force meets an immovable object.

CHOCOLAT, both the book and movie, is a whimsical comedy that blossoms as Lent progresses, and Vianne’s shop becomes a position of healing and sanctuary for several of the town’s disturbed residents. Because Vianne’s store is seen (by the local Church establishment) as diametrically opposed to the spirit of the season, the anecdote can also be taken as a gentle myth of conflict between Christianity and paganism.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Chocolat! Click Here

Juliette Binoche is handsome in her role. (I judge I’m in worship.) Judi Dench is her usual top-notch best as Armande, an broken-down widow deprived of her grandson’s company by an over-protective mother, Armande’s beget daughter (Carrie-Anne Moss) . There’s also a shrimp role played by Leslie Caron. (Where’s she been in unusual years? ) And Alfred Molina is positively vivid as the uptight mayor, so dominant that he personally writes the Sunday sermons to be delivered by the local pastor, Fr. Henri, apparently only recently ordained and worthy in terror of the Comte. Johnny Depp has an curious role as one member of a band of despised river gypsies unbiased floating through.

One very obedient reason why CHOCOLAT the film is better than CHOCOLAT the book is the added dimension of visualization which the aged imparts to several elements of the storyline, specifically the mysterious wind that blew our heroine into town, Anouk’s pet Pantoufle, the toothsome chocolates themselves (seductively arrayed in the shop window), and the climax of the conflict between Vianne and the Comte.

CHOCOLAT the film is one that will have the audience leaving the theater feeling sterling, and maybe wishing for a cup of Vianne’s hot chocolate with a pinch of cayenne pepper. I can’t recommend this cinematic gem enough.

Lasse Hallstrom’s film version of the Joanne Harris’ unique Chocolat is as luscious a confection as were the heroines’ chocolate creations themselves. The spot is intricate and exciting, carrying the viewer through the emotional transformations of each of the main characters. In a sleepy medieval French town where life has assumed a repressive structure that has created an emotionally frozen and empty life for even the most highly placed members of its society, the heroine Vianne and her daughter reach to location up a chocolate shop. With her wonderfully concocted sweets she manages to liberate some of the denizens of the town, revealing their potential for greater happiness. The epic has a sense of chronicle, fantasy, and fairytale about it that leaves the viewer with a feeling of personal satisfaction.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Chocolat! Click Here

Buy,Download, Or Stream Chocolat! Click Here

This is a film pudgy of strong female performers. Judi Dench is especially amazing as a curmudgeonly elderly woman estranged from her daughter and forbidden to glance her grandson. Juliette Binoche does a blooming job as the heroine. She is as fragile and seductive as Monroe in some scenes and as forceful and independent as Bacall in others. Lena Olin is astonishing as the abused wife who rises from the confusion and ashes of her gain ruined personality like a phoenix under the influence of the heroine.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a ling while, and I quiz to order and read the book upon which it was based–something I rarely do.

Before I start my review, my recommendation would be to watch the first season. That way you can have a better understanding of the relationships between the characters. Episode 1

After the Lord of the Terror that ended season one, Yggdrasil (Heavens Computer) has lost information on the contracts (or wishes) that were made…including (you guessed it) the contract between Keiichi and Belldandy. And for the first time ever, Keiichi decides to ask out Belldandy out on a date. During the course of the date, Keiichi and Belldandy reveal how much they care for one another.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ah! My Goddess Season 2: Flights of Fancy, Vol. 1 - Everyone Has Wings! Click Here

Episode 2

Its that time of the year were you give presents to the ones you love (Christmas) and everybody is happy…except Sayoko, aka The Queen Of The Campus. Sayoko starts to realize that while she has the power to make every man on the campus bend to her whim there is one guy that won’t-Keiichi. So Sayoko (in some twisted logic) decides to try and win Keiichi away from Belldandy (I won’t go into detail, but the way Keiichi disrespects her is beyond funny. My friend said it best: instead of one shot, one kill he does many shots leading to overkill). On the other side of the island Belldandy is knitting a special present for Keiichi. She explains to her sisters Skuld and Urd that the act of knitting symbolizes (to her) that you are weaving your love into every strand. After some events that lead to BellDandy’s getting her gift stolen and Sayoko having a moment of clarity, Keiichi receives the gift.

Episode 3

Keiichi is in a bit of a jam. See, since Belldandy gave him a gift and has spent nearly a year with him, he wants to return the favor. Unfortunately, like most guys, the gift he wants to give her costs a lot and he doesn’t have enough cash (sound familiar fellas?). So being the man that he is, he decides to get a job so he can have the cash to get her gift. What is unique about this episode is Keiichi tells Belldandy that for the next week he will be coming home later then usual and don’t wait up. Belldandy (in typical fashion) says okay. The reasoning behind this is Belldandy trusts him fully and isn’t worried about him cheating (she explains more), but more worried about him being hurt. Urd overhears about Keiichi plans and decides to pitch in. Surprisingly, she actually acts like a friend to Keiichi and gives some sisterly advice to Belldandy. Near the end, Sayoko makes an appearance and complicates matters for Keiichi.

Episode 4

Keiichi wonders if it is alright to keep the love of the Goddess to himself. While attending Sayoko’s Christmas party, Belldandy takes her first sip of coke, and something unexpected happens. Keiichi finds himself in pursuit of a goddess who decides to spread the love of a goddess all about town.

All in All, I would say that this series is off to a very good start. But again, if you haven’t watched the first season, you might be a tad confused on why a Goddess would be with a human :}

Where oh where to begin? This is the first volume of the second season of the animated series based off of one of the most beloved romance/comdey manga of all time. Well first off a few warnings. First off if your new to the franchise, do not buy this one until you’ve become familized with the franchise or you’ll be completely lost. And second to those who like and anime series to follow the manga it’s based on word for word, you won’t like this. For everybody else, the Goddess are back and better then ever.

Now for the actual review. The series picks up right where the last left off, the clean up after the Lord of Terror incident. The flow is nice and shows none of lag found in the mangas and keeps Keiichi and Belldandy’s relationship rolling. I for one am very happy to see that the director is moving things along much faster then the manga. Mean their relationship has come along as far in the number of episodes as it had manga. Though this does mean a considerable trimming of the side stories and romances though given the opening not for long. Also they’ve reworked certain stories that I really don’t know who they are going to fix the damage, the hand in hand story arc is completely wrecked unless they pull off some magic. Now on to something beside story line reorganization commentary. The music is just as wonderful as the first time around and the voice acting in both lanuages are spot on and every character sounds exactly as you imagine the would. The art is even better then the last time, the elongated faces are gone allowing for the character designsto really shine, i.e. the goddesses actually look as beautiful as goddesses. Though Keiichi still has elephant ears. Everything in the series is fluid and smooth. The series innocent, charming and warm feeling is back in full force with moments and scenes that you can’t help but smile fondly at just remembering them.

In the end if you’re a fan of the franchise or the previous series be certain to pick this one up. If not go back and pickup the rest of the series and then get back to this one, trust me you want to check out this franchise.

Volume Two of Naruto is what, in my oppinion, made the show a masterpiece. The character deatil shown here is some of the most enthralling in any anime. This volume contains the end of the Zabuza arc and the start of the Chunin Exams arc. And let me say, what a way to end Naruto’s first arc. It had me in tears. One of the most touching scenes I’ve ever seen in an anime. If you liked Volume One, you’ll LOVE Volume Two… and believe me, you’ll be itching for more.

Naruto Uncut Boxed Set Volume 2 is one of the best DVD purchases I’ve made. The series teaches a lot of life lessons for children and adults and the substance of the program is much more than you would initially expect. It teaches one to never give in even when the odds are against you- a very good life lesson. Naruto is one of the best anime series’ ever created besides Dragon Ball Z which is my all time favorite. It has great character depth & quality, awesome animation and epic storylines, battles and dialogue. But this judgment cannot be reached by just veiwing these first two DVD sets. Watch the series for yourself and you will quickly become a beleiver…BELEIVE IT!!!Naruto Uncut Boxed Set, Volume 2

“In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.” In 1939, Ludwig Bemelmans began writing stories about a group of girls in a school in Paris, foremost among whom was the irrepressible Madeline. In the 1990s these wonderful stories were animated (and narrated by Christopher Plummer), producing a series of cartoons that are certain to be considered classics for many years to come.

This DVD contains two 25-minute features. In Madeline’s Winter Vacation, the girls set out for a visit to Miss Clavel’s aunt, who lives in the Alps. Pepito fills the girls heads with stories of the Abominable Snowman, which really begin to bear fruit when a sudden snowstorm snows the girls in. In Madeline in London, the girls are saddened when Pepito’s father (the Spanish Ambassador) is reassigned to London. But, ever resourceful, Madeline organizes a trip to visit Pepito…and then she remembers that it is Pepito’s birthday!

My family and I love this DVD; the stories are wonderful, and funny. We consider this a great purchase. If I have one complaint against this DVD, it is that it has no “extras”; there are the two episodes and a short commercial for the other DVDs, and that is all. However, as this DVD is so reasonably priced, I would not let that stand in your way. This is a great DVD to share with the children in your life; buy it!

I loved these movies for several reasons. First of all, these movies have the same quality as all the Madeline cartoons, and secondly, I loved the lessons that they taught. This is an excellent DVD.

The movie is really cute, except there is an abdomindable snowman that my two-year old daughter is afraid of. She covers her eyes when she sees him. Otherwise she loves the show.

If you liked season one, you are going to love season two. However, if you only liked season one for the racy sex scenes, you will be disappointed. Season two focuses on the political aspects of Henry VIII’s reign and the downfall of Anne Boleyn. The show received a ton of criticism for being historically inaccurate in season one, and thankfully, they really cleaned up their act for season two. I have since read several books (Alison Weir and David Starkey both have good ones) and the effort to make season two more accurate is obvious and I think that the viewers will appreciate that. I certainly did. Here is a summary of my favorite episodes from season two:

Episode 2- Henry tells Anne that he intends to marry her and make her Queen of England. He dubs her Marquess of Pembroke and they travel to France where Henry presents her to Francis I (King of France) as his future wife. She does an amazingly enchanting dance with her ladies for Francis I that will leave you drooling. Henry and Anne finally seal the deal; she becomes pregnant with Elizabeth I.

Episode 5- This episode is centered on the downfall of Thomas More. This is some of the finest acting work that I have ever seen. Jeremy Northam gives the performance of a lifetime. This episode will make any grown man cry. Henry makes the tough decision to execute the only man that has ever had the integrity to be honest with him and stick to his beliefs even during the political mayhem of the time. Without giving too much away, the ending sequence is breathtaking. Bravo to both Jeremy Northam and Jonathan Rhys Myers, both did a great job in this episode.

Episode 7- Anne realizes that she will never truly be Queen of England as long as Katherine is alive. She is starting to realize that her days are numbered and she is quickly losing the King’s favor. Anne and Henry share a sex scene that will make your heart race. Amazing camera and editing work in this episode from the dance/sex scene to the final scene that I will explain in a second. Katherine dies and Maria Doyle Kennedy really shines as she hangs on for dear life until the very end. Anne and Henry have their infamous celebration in the courtyard and Anne has a very intense scene with her father at the very end where she announces that all is good in the world, “There is good news all around. Katherine is dead and I am pregnant. I am pregnant with the King’s son. We are on the edge of a golden world!”

Episode 10- There is no doubt that season two belongs to Natalie Dormer as Anne, but here she leaves the viewers with no doubts. She IS Anne as she awaits her death in the tower and finally takes leave of the world. Calling her performance amazing would be an understatement. Everything from her quiet hysterics to her eerie calm to her infamous line, “I have a little neck.” She captures everything that we know about Anne Boleyn and her final days in the tower. I have watched this episode over and over and over again and cry like a baby every time. They really paid a lovely tribute to this fascinating woman, even down to the color of her gown and her final words as she approaches the scaffold. Brilliant!! I definitely felt a sense of loss that Natalie won’t be on the show next season, but we should be proud of her representation of Anne Boleyn. Natalie will truly be missed and the other cast members have big shoes to fill.

I do want to point out a couple of things that I did notice that were inaccurate just in case people want to discuss it here. In episode one, Charles Brandon tells the King that he has remarried and that his wife’s name is “Catherine Brooke” when her name was actually Catherine Willoughby. He also said that he needed a mother for his young son, when in fact, he already had 3 children by this time. Also, in episode one there is a scene where Thomas Wyatt and Anne Boleyn are in bed together. They show this as some sort of dream or figment of his imagination, but I cannot figure out why they would do this in the first place. It is known that Thomas Wyatt did have some sort of affection toward Anne, but this scene may cause a bit of confusion for viewers that aren’t as familiar with the story. Also, in episode ten, after they arrest the men (Thomas Wyatt included) Cromwell tells Wyatt that he will be freed and he yells after Cromwell, “But I am the only one who is guilty!!” I don’t really think that this was necessary since there is no evidence to back up any type of physical relationship between the two of them or any proof that Thomas Wyatt had some sort of obsession/imaginary relationship with Anne going on in his own mind. However, I do think that historians generally agree that he was enamored by her.

There will be spoilers here - a caveat. Please read on.

Meet Henry VIII as he was as a young man: a political rock star — handsome, robust, wild, spoiled, and hot-tempered. Everything he wanted, he got — except for that elusive male heir…

The Tudors (SII) is an absolutely gorgeous visual ode to one of the most controversial chapters in Western political history. The series itself is a dazzling celebration of Tudor-era music (a precursor to our own pop music), stunning costumes, lovely, lusty women and handsome manly men, breathtaking castles and Tudor manors. Season II is even more provocative, dangerous, and sexy than the first season. Bravo, Showtime, for producing such a lush, thoughtful, and beautifully produced series that is above all an intelligent meditation on the shifting nature of politics and the dangers of gross imbalances of political power.

I am a literary scholar who specializes in this period and I love the adaptation, despite some of its loose treatment of dates and persons. The series captures the tumultuous *spirit* of Henry’s era. The series allows us to peer into this astonishing historical moment, the instant when England broke from the Church of Rome. The future of politics and the state of nations would never be the same. Another plus: Henry’s queens are brought to life beautifully by Maria Doyle Kennedy (as the pious and determined Katherine of Aragon) and by the newcomer Natalie Dormer, who excellently plays the controversial Anne Boleyn as a fierce social-climber haunted by her past and troubled by her father’s rabid political manipulations. Dormer’s Boleyn has a look deep in her eyes that shows us that she knows, in her soul, that she is doomed. This is a testament to Dormer as a young actress; she shows us the “arc” of Anne Boleyn as Anne/Natalie matures from a young and ambitious mistress to-the-king to a neglected, then persecuted, wife and lonely mother (to Elizabeth I, future great queen). JRM is also splendidly original as Henry: brash, lustful, and temperamental. We can believe in his Henry’s burning love for Anne as well as his eventual hatred for her and his willingness to have the mother of his child executed.

This series is in my opinion the finest vision of this time period, superior to A Man for All Seasons, Anne of the Thousand Days, the Elizabeth I series with Helen Mirren, and numerous others. This series has sparkle and spirit in addition to rich intelligence (evidenced by its well-composed screenplay), smart casting choices (though Joss Stone is still a question mark for me as Anne of Cleves), and sensational locations. Bravo!
